Pesticides sit at the centre of one of food’s most emotionally charged debates. Farmers can lose crops to insects, weeds and disease. Crop-protection products can reduce those losses. At the same time, pesticides can create risks to farm workers, consumers and ecosystems when the wrong product is used, directions are ignored or exposure is poorly controlled.

Why farmers use pesticides
Farmers use herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and other crop-protection products because pests and diseases can seriously reduce yield and quality. The existence of that benefit does not mean every application is justified, and the existence of risk does not mean every treated crop is unsafe.
Residue is not the same as misuse
Regulatory systems set rules around which pesticides may be used on particular crops, how they are applied and how much residue may legally remain in food. Pre-harvest intervals matter because they specify time that should pass between an application and harvest.
Problems arise when farmers use unapproved products, exceed rates, ignore protective equipment, spray too close to harvest or fail to follow label directions. Those are production and enforcement issues worth confronting directly.
Reducing unnecessary chemical dependence
Integrated pest management combines monitoring, crop rotation, resistant varieties, biological controls, physical methods and carefully targeted pesticide use where needed. Agroecological approaches can also help farmers design systems that rely less heavily on routine chemical intervention.
